Get into the Old Groove in the New Year

Well, it is 2021! The holidays are over, the Christmas decorations are coming down, friends and family have departed for their homes and it is time to return to go back to our regular daily routines. But even though the holidays are over that doesn’t mean the cold and gloomy winter days are.

On those cold, cloudy winter days it is tempting to let the weather dictate your mood… but it doesn’t have to.

It’s easy to take a break during the holidays and not stick to your normal routine of diet and exercise. I mean, come on! It’s a holiday! We have to take SOME breaks, right? But once it is all over and the new year has begun…it is really hard to get back into the swing of it again. And…let’s admit it, we feel rather sluggish and lazy, and the cold and gloomy days of winter make us feel less than excited to start again.

But there comes a time to get off the couch, leave the Christmas leftovers behind and get back into the old groove in a new year. Don’t let your break go on for too long or it will get harder to get out of and your body will feel worse…and that is when we face the temptation to give up before we are even two months in. Here are a few important ways to get yourself out of the slumps and re-energize your mind. Start out slowly at first if you have to…but keep on going!

Drink, Drink, Drink

I know drinking a lot of water is harder to remember during the winter months, than it is when we are really active, hot and sweaty…but it is just as important to avoid getting dehydrated during winter as it is in summer. It helps avoid low energy levels, fatigue, headaches and improve your mood.

Drinking plenty of water is essential to good health, and I believe should be one of the top items on the list for the new year…and all year long. water helps improve the digestive system by helping to keep things moving and clear out waste, clean the blood, and aid the detox process. It can also improve the appearance of your skin, giving you a healthy glow, and help your eyes look brighter and your hair shinier!

Exercise

Not only does this help get rid of those unwanted holiday pounds, but getting back into a workout routine also boosts your happiness and energy levels. Experts discovered that low-intensity workouts, such as a leisurely stroll, caused a drop in fatigue levels and a 20% energy boost! Some good news after the holiday slump!

Exercise could also be an answer for helping you face going back to work! One study found that employees who worked out on work days felt less stressed, happier and were more productive than on days when they skipped a workout.

Joyful Smells

Odors can have a rather big effect on our mood. Some smells can make us feel yuck and give us a headache, thus putting us in a foul mood, or they can relax us, clear our brain and make us feel happy. This makes aromatherapy a great way to help improve your mood and boost your brain focus. ย Smell is the strongest of the sensations and is best able to influence brain activity. Olfactory bulbs are part of the limbic system and directly connect to the regions of the brain that process emotion and learning. This is one reason why a certain smell will trigger a memory or remind us of someone or something.

It is always important that you are inhaling CLEAN smells, and not a bunch of toxins (even though they may smell wonderful). So maybe switch out those candles for a diffuser with essential oils, such as: Peppermint, Rosemary, Lemon, or Lavender. Find your happy scent and enjoy!

Retrain Your Eating Habits

What you feed your body will either fuel and energize it, or weigh it down, making it sluggish and depressed….not to mention, sick. It’s time to put away those leftover desserts, baked goods and Christmas candy, and pull out the greens! Getting back into a diet of clean fruits and vegetables and whole, organic foods rich in vitamins and nutrients (such as omega-3 fish and foods), can help FUEL your body, feed your energy and get your body and brain out of the holiday fog and gloom…even on those grey gloomy days!

Christmas Oils and Herbs

Ah! The smells of Christmas! The food, the tree, the candles…and, yes, even some of the decorations. There are just some smells that we can all pretty much agree are… Christmasy!

-Nutmeg

At first it may not seem very Christmasy…but just wait:

Nutmeg: You will find some very popular Christmas foods contain this ingredient: Homemade Eggnog, a very popular Christmas drink! Cocoa! Hot Apple Cider! All of these delicious holiday drinks are great with a little sprinkle of nutmeg. Or another one of your favorite holiday desserts.

Nutmeg Essential Oil: Stick a couple drops of Nutmeg with two drops Lemongrass, three drops Cinnamon, and three drops of StressAway to create a Christmas Gingerbread smell around the house.

-Cinnamon

Who doesn’t love the smell of cinnamon during the holidays?!

Cinnamon: Don’t you like the taste of cinnamon in your holiday desserts? You know it is also good for your immune system. And this is the season to keep it going strong! Double check!

Cinnamon Essential Oil: There is a lot of yucky-ness that goes around when family and friends get together for the holidays. Enter Cinnamon! It can help fight those little bugs…and it tastes good, too! You can also pop a few drops into your diffuser to help deodorize your home and fight anything that might still be flying around there.

-Peppermint

VERY much a Christmas smell, I think! A comfort for the stomach or the nose.

Peppermint: Whether you think of the plant or the hard candy…it adds some great flavor to foods or drinks. Put some mint leaves in water or tea to aid in digestion, OR flavor your food and please your taste buds!

Peppermint Essential Oil: A very cooling oil and soothing scent, you can place a few drops in a diffuser or spray bottle to make your house smell like a candy cane, or apply it topically to soothe muscle or a tummy that has had too many sweets this holiday season.

-Myrrh

Best known for its role as one of the gifts given by the Wise Men to Baby Jesus…

Myrrh Essential Oil: This is a good one for winter skin…especially when it gets all dry, cracked and chapped this time of year. It is also known to be helpful for relaxation…’cause we could all use some of that after the excitement of these days.

-Frankincense

A resin also best known for its role as another gift given by the Wise Men to Baby Jesus…

Frankincense Essential Oil: Also a good one for the immune system and healthy skin…both well needed during the winter and holiday months. It is wonderful for the brain and helpful in improving sleep.

There are many other wonderful oils and herbs that you can use throughout the winter and holidays, but these are just a few favorites. Perhaps you learned something that you want to add to your stash for next year…or even this year.

Too Much Moodiness?

I have noticed that we tend to get irritated way too easily. A hiccup in our plans, rearranging the schedule last minute, the slow driver on the highway, technology that won’t work. Anything that causes us a little inconvenience just gets under our skin and turns our whole mood sour and our day is ruined.

Now, I want to say first off that it’s not wrong to get a little irritated sometimes… because it IS rough when you are stuck behind a really slow driver, or you are trying to get something accomplished and technology is just not working with us. However, we let those inconveniences bother us WAY more than we should. We constantly dwell on them and, instead of taking a deep breath and controlling how we think and look at our situations, we let them control us and our thoughts. Then we have a big mess. ๐Ÿ™‚ We ourselves are miserable, and we also make it miserable for those around us. What is inside, what we meditate and dwell on, is eventually going to come out… and no one wants to be around someone who is miserable. They will be miserable, too.

It is impossible in this life to have positive thoughts all the time and never get irritated. We are sinful people living in a sinful world after all; but we don’t have to be in a bad mood ALL the time.ย And we don’t have to transfer that bad mood to others. Here are some helpful tips to try and reduce those moods:

1. Positive Noise

What you let yourself listen to has a great impact on how you behave and what you think about. It is very easy to get annoyed when we are on the road. With construction, crazy drivers and annoyingly long traffic lights, there is a lot that can mess up our day and our plans; and don’t even get me started about when there is a time limit involved!

So plug your ears to all the negative thoughts flying around you and pop in some of your favorite music… or an audio book. You are much less likely to be fuming about the length of the light or the slowness of the cars around you when you are trying to concentrate on the words to your favorite song. It makes time go by much faster. And don’t be afraid to sing along! Hey, when you are sitting in bumper to bumper traffic, roll down your windows and share the joy! ๐Ÿ™‚

2. Smell the Roses

Nature is very therapeutic. Have you ever noticed how calming a walk in the park is? A hike through the woods? A swim in the lake? Try taking a walk when things start getting under your skin. Even just walking barefoot in your backyard (this is called grounding) feels so relaxing. All the irritating things we struggle with seem so small in the midst of the beauty in nature.

Try applying or diffusing some of the many soothing and uplifting essential oils. I’m sure you have a favorite smell that just makes everything around you seem brighter.

3. Talk About It

You know, sometimes we just NEED TO RANT; and occasionally that is OK. Keeping our feelings locked up inside is not always a good thing. If we are struggling with frustrations and we keep it tucked away it can easily grow until it eats away at us… or we explode. Neither of those options are good. ๐Ÿ™‚ Sometimes talking to your family and friends about things that bother you is a great way to relieve stress. Be careful with your words, you don’t want to drag anyone down or make them desire to run away. After you talk about it, let it go. The more you bring it up the more you are tempted to dwell on those little details. Then it is a very slippery slide to where it consumes your thoughts again.

Pray. God will always listen and He is willing to help you with your struggles. As a side note… it may be thought of as crazy, but talking about things out loud to yourself can help a lot. ๐Ÿ˜€

Look around you. God gave us an amazing life to live; and it is a shame to waste it by letting the little troubles of the day get under our skin and make us miserable. Trust me, it is not worth it. Besides, we all think it would be wonderful if the people we meet every day would be in good moods for us. How can we expect something from someone else that we are not willing to do ourselves?

So begin with you (and me), and get out there today and start that positive domino effect! Spread the JOY!!

“Now may the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope…”
